On 27 January, 1945 the Gates of Auschwitz were thrown open and the world knew! On this Day commemorative events are held across the world to remember not only the more than six million victims of Nazi persecution but also those, who have been murdered by actors of genocide, which are still going on to this day.
Moving Ceremonies were held in Leigh and Wigan Town Halls to remember the victims across time and place and to offer hope for the future.
Both of these Events were led by members of Wigan Rotary Club and there were moving performances by pupils of St. John Fisher Catholic High School and also contributions form Aukje Clegg, OBE, who spoke of her Dutch parents, leading figures in the Resistance Movement in Friesland, and also Leigh Paperback Writers Group, who provided a moving piece of writing on this Year's international theme, 'The Power of Words'.
At both Events the Mayor of Wigan, Cllr. Bill Clarke, lit the 'Remembrance' candle and also spoke the words of the United Nations 'Statement of Commitment'!
