Armed with spades and other garden implements, ten Rotarians from the Rotary Clubs of Sandbach and Sandbach Crosses recently met Mark Arnold, Site Ranger at Brereton Heath Local Nature Reserve to plant some trees. DG Eric was also in attendance to offer support and take some photos.
They were expecting the job to be called off, it being the morning after a very cold and snowy weekend, but digging was easier than expected and the sun was shining and a total of 55 young trees - one for each member of the two clubs - were soon planted.
The Rotarians were responding to a challenge by the President of Rotary International, Ian Riseley, for every member of Rotary to plant a tree and change the environment for the better by Earth Day in April 2018.
Satisfied that the hawthorn, hazel and whitethorn would, in due course, not only provide berries for the birds and other wildlife, but would contribute to reducing global warming, the group retired to a local hostelry for coffee.
