The Rotary Club of Biddulph took over the maintenance of the Garden of Tranquillity and other areas which they had set up between St. Lawrence's Church and Biddulph Grange, some time ago and work has been on-going since to keep the area in tip top condition. This helped the Biddulph-in-Bloom organisation, headed by Hilda Sheldon, to win a prestigious award.
This year, as part of its community work, Rotary is again helping to maintain this high standard, so during recent weekends, groups of Biddulph Rotarians have been working to maintain the gardens and Bateman Walk. The gardens were badly in need of attention following winter storm damage, work on the new cemetery and the earthmoving attentions of the badger colony which has moved back into this area. At one point on the Bateman Walk the path was almost completely buried in earth thrown out by the badgers and it had been decided that the only way to retain a clear pathway was to erect a second barrier wall to form a clear 'trench' alongside the walkway.
Using funds made available by the Rotary Foundation the wood required has been purchased and groups of rotarians have worked to construct the necessary barrier, so that the Bateman Walk can once again be returned to its original condition.
