16 year old St Gabriel’s student Sean Corcoran of Walmersley Road, Bury could be one to watch in the future after being named Bury Schoolboy Footballer of the Year 2017 and becoming the latest winner of the Wilf Ainscow ''Ranger" Trophy, which is awarded by the Rotary Club of Bury.

PhiI Emmott, Secretary of the Rotary Club of Bury, said “The St. Gabriel’s Year 11 team won 10 out of 11 games played. The only defeat was in the Manchester Catholic cup final against St. Cuthbert’s. All other games were won in the Bury League and Cup. Sean was integral to this success as a midfield player at the heart of the action. Sean is a selfless player who puts the needs of the team ahead of his own. He is respected by all his team mates who recognise the fantastic work rate and quality he brings to the team. Throughout the Bury Cup run Sean came up with important goals and influential performances when the team needed them. It was fitting that he scored the third goal in the final in the 3-0 win Vs. Bury Church as this was the last goal scored by the Year 11 team. Sean really was the heartbeat of the team and always led by example.”
He added that "As someone who played twice at Wembley (gaining two Oxford University Soccer Blues) it gives me enormous pleasure to acknowledge Sean’s sporting talents and achievements. I cannot envisage a more worthy recipient of this trophy.”

The “Ranger” Trophy is presented in memory of Wilf Ainscow, a long serving member and past president of the Rotary Club of Bury who was part owner and editor of the Bury Times and covered Bury FC as a sports reporter under the penname "Ranger".
