Irlam Rotary has a close working relationship with the Hamilton Davies Trust and work together on projects to improve the lives of the residents of Irlam and Cadishead. At one of their regular meetings in 2012 a suggestion about brightening up the main road through the district resulted in the start of the Irlam in Bloom project.
The basic idea was to place hanging baskets of flowers on the fronts of businesses along Liverpool Road for the purpose of brightening up the main thoroughfare.
The first year the project sited 80 baskets and 40 troughs on the businesses and shops along the main road the A57. The flower baskets were well received and the project was repeated the following year. By the third year Irlam Railway Station had been redeveloped and a further 18 baskets were situated there.
The project then expanded into under planting flowers into large planters which currently contained Acer trees, these are situated in the car park next to Woodwind in Cadishead.
In the 3rd year of this project by utilising the skills and efforts of some of the club members the project began to propagate the flowers and plant up the baskets ourselves.
In the 4th year the club took on a further challenge when the project was expanded into citing 118 half round lamp post basket that are hung on brackets fitted to the lamp posts along the main road.
Most of the round hanging baskets and troughs were installed in year 1 subsequently that has increased, 80 baskets are now up to 130. The initial 40 troughs went up to 50 and then dropped back to 40 again when a local pub was demolished. Very noticeable are the 118 lamp post baskets.
In 2016 the club took over the planting of 28 large pavement planters from Salford Council. These are planted each summer and autumn with a variety of seasonal plants and bulbs.
