The Purple Crocus has become the emblem of this work, the colour of the dye used to mark one finger of the 2.5 billion children who have been immunised.
With only 13 cases of the disease reported this year, eradication is closer than ever. We are grateful to Local Schools and the Culcheth & District Horticultural Society for their assistance with crocus planting and for that splash of colour which will appear in the Spring to remind us all of this cause.
The photograph shows children from Culcheth Community Primary School, assisted by Horticultural Society and Rotary Club members, planting crocus corms in Culcheth at the grassed area by the junction of Withington Avenue and Warrington Road. Crocus corms were also planted opposite the New Inn in Culcheth, and in Croft by the Memorial Hall and Playing Fields. Planting also took place in the grounds of Winwick Church.
So we say a big thank you to our school children and hope they enjoyed working to brighten spring time in our district.
