Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland joined forces last year with the Royal Horticultural Society to plant over 7 million purple crocus bulbs across Britain and Ireland as part of their Purple4Polio effort, to raise awareness and funds for the End Polio Now campaign.
When Rotary made the commitment to the WHO, in 1985, to help eradicate Polio, more than 350,000 children a year were paralysed by the disease. Through Rotarys efforts that figure had reduced to just 35 last year. The Purple4Polio campaign, named after the marker dye which colours the little finger of every child who is given the anti polio vaccine, aims to reduce that figure to zero and Rotary clubs across Britain and Ireland have planted over 7 million crocus bulbs in support of the effort.
In Biddulph, Rotary teamed up with Biddulph in Bloom to plant their share of the bulbs after deciding that the grassy area around the roundabout at the south end of the bypass would be a suitable location, that would provide a colourful backdrop in Spring.
