On Monday 19th December, the Rotary Club of Eccles had a surprise visit from Rtn. Tony Robson President of the Rotary Club of Durbanville, South Africa. Tony, originally from Eccles, was on a family visit and although staying in Morecambe decided to join us at our meeting.
He brought with him photographs of their Christmas project Oom Piet (Uncle Pete) where Santa visits children at parties organised by the club. These take place in an arena annually built by club members in the open air and in addition to Santa have a pantomime and clowns. The parties take place over 5 or 6 days with the first being a free event for children from farm schools and the others being fund-raising events.
Tony also told members about other Durbanville projects including distributing redundant educational and medical equipment from Canada, providing meals from dehydrated foodstuffs (again from Canada) and family health checks for families who live in the poorer areas.
