As Great Britain celebrates the success of the Olympic Games in Brazil we also remember some of our disabled sportsmen. Glossop Rotary Club were fortunate to have as an honorary member, Tom Jordan, captain of the England Amputee Football Team .
Tragically, Tom died last year leaving funds for a bursary to be managed by the Rotary Club to help another young local young person dealing with severe disability but displaying outstanding courage and determination and thereby being an inspiration to others.
The first recipient of this bursary is Sam Robinson, a ten year old boy whp suffers from Glucose Transporter Deficiency syndrome. This means that Sam, has to miss out on so many things that other boys take for granted. Most notably, Sam lacks the energy to perform even simple tasks such as writing and has to rely on other people to record his thoughts and ideas. In spite of these problems, Sam perseveres through many situations that would leave most of us curled up in bed feeling sorry for ourselves.
Glossop Rotary Club presented Sam, who was accompanied by his parents, with the bursary at a regular club meeting. The bursary, worth £500 will be used for the purchase of ICT equipment and dictation software which will enable him to record his own thought and ideas and increase his independence and self confidence.
Sam lit up the room with his wonderful smile and made us all feel proud of what Rotary can achieve.
