The President of the Rotary Club of Douglas, Clare Faulds, assisted by Douglas Corporation Head Arborist, Karl Blower, is pictured with Rotary Club Members planting the first of nine fruit trees in lower Nobles Park, Douglas.

This is part of an initiative by the Douglas Borough Council to plant nine mixed fruit trees at Noble’s Park and a further nine trees at Ballaughton Park, the cost having been met by the Rotary Club of Douglas. Douglas Corporation’s Assistant Head of Parks (Technical), Graham Newsome, has organised the supply of trees and the Parks Department will plant and be responsible for their future upkeep.

The initiative is to improve the environment but more particularly to educate children in understanding food sources and particularly where fruit comes from. It will also provide an on-site supply of fresh fruit when the trees mature. The initiative carries on from the Douglas Corporation’s recent programme whereby nine local schools planted Seventy trees under the Queen’s Green Canopy scheme.

The Rotary Club of Douglas has recently also collaborated with The Douglas Corporation Parks Department in the planting of 2,000 purple crocuses in Summerhill Glen, as part of the Eradicate Polio Programme. The tree planting is part of Rotary International’s Youth Programme and Protection of the Environment activities.
