Ghana Outlook is a UK charity founded 21 years ago by Venture Scout leaders from South Yorkshire who led an International Scouting project in 1998 to build two schools in the Volta Region of Ghana. Since those early days more than 10 schools have been built in rural communities throughout the country in various locations where major charities do not reach.
Their focus today is much wider and includes safe water and sanitation supplies, helping to improve health and wellbeing, community farming initiatives and sustainable food supply and income.
Each year Rotary Cheadle Royal members support local, national and international charities and this year the Ghana Outlook safe water project has been chosen.
A daily routine for most Ghanaian women, and sometimes children, is collecting water from contaminated streams, ponds and dugouts miles away from their village. As a result women are away from their homesteads and their families and children often miss out on their schooling.
The Ghana Outlook safe water project provides for the supply and installation of a borehole in the heart of the community ensuring an abundance of safe clean water for the village. The cost of each borehole is in the region of £4,500 and in an effort to raise the funds; members of
Rotary Cheadle Royal joined forces with the Rotary Club of Scarborough Cavaliers in a simultaneous 10K Walk for Water. Unfortunately, the weather in Cheshire on the day was somewhat inclement but the group, although smiling; found their efforts rewarding (thanks to a matching grant and generous donations), but also somewhat soggy.
