All across the United Kingdom, people are being encouraged to Plant a Tree for the Jubilee through the Queens Green Canopy project in honour of Her Majestys 70 years of service to the nation and the wider Commonwealth.
The Queens Green Canopy is a nationwide drive where individuals, groups, businesses and whole towns and cities are being encouraged to plant thousands of trees to protect their local environment in the fight against the climate crisis.
Additionally, once planted the tree/s can be photographed and uploaded on to the official national QGC Map showing where they are located in the country.
Never wanting to miss out on an opportunity to work for the benefit of their local community, Rotary Cheadle Royal members researched areas where they could plant trees in support of the upcoming Jubilee project. Having identified Meriton Road Park, Handforth as a suitable location, the group were pleased to learn of a new Landscape Master Plan for the park being developed by Cheshire East Council. After submitting their ideas for two French style (All`ee) avenues of thirty two cherry blossom trees, the Rotary group were delighted to have their project accepted and included in the overall council plan.
A fundraising partnership has been formed and funds have been raised by Rotary Cheadle Royal - Friends of Meriton Road Park Manchester Airport Community Fund Equilibrium Greener Cheshire Ltd and an anonymous donor.
Rotarian, Geoff Shelmerdine said; The 4-year old trees will be planted during November 2021 and in the fullness of time will enhance the appearance of the park enormously as well as supporting wildlife and contributing to the carbon capture objective. We believe the tree avenues will make an impressive, even dramatic effect, and be extremely popular with local residents and visitors. On behalf of Rotary Cheadle Royal I thank our collaborative partners for their efforts and support for this important legacy and we look forward to seeing the trees in full bloom in time for the Queens Platinum Jubilee year in 2022.
