Destined to be the place to be last weekend was Manchester Airports popular Visitor Park for the launch of the Rotary Cheadle Royal inaugural Icons of the Road Classic and Vintage Car Occasion which took off despite the downpour.
After months of planning the charity fundraiser and looking forward to welcoming over 150 makes and models of cherished cars from yesteryear and the present day, the Rotarians were not going to let a deluge of wind and rain disappoint members of the public from enjoying the 50 or so Icons that had also braved to dire weather to show off their pride and joy.
From a 1960s Dennis F8 Fire Engine to a pair of Deloreans - Lotus 7s, Jaguars, Jensons, TVRs, Mercedes Benz, Morris Minors and even something for the so called petrol heads to drool over with exhibits of RS and XR.
Rotarian, Geoff Shelmerdine said, the idea for the event came about because we had been financially supporting three local food banks and two local hospices during the past 18 months and as such, our charity funds were depleted and we had no opportunities for additional fund raising activities due to the pandemic restrictions. But all was not lost, the Icons came (albeit in smaller numbers) the general public came and the Rotarians were rewarded for their hard work with donations of over £600 to be used once again in support of local worthy causes and those less fortunate.
Will it take place again next year? you can count on that rain or shine.
