Could young people playing games online with others be one of the answers to finding life on other planets? Pupils listened enthralled to Rotary's annual 'Excitement of Science' live stream delivered by one of the UK's leading experts in Astrophysics, specialising in the search for extra-terrestrial life forms.

Dr. Eamonn Kerins of the University of Manchester's Centre for Astrophysics at the Jodrell Bank Radio Observatory believes that co-operative game playing could be one way to connect with other civilisations who - like us - may be looking for signals from other worlds.

Rotarian John Shaw (a retired former scientist) made the arrangements for students from four local Secondary Schools to attend the live stream lecture to encourage those in Years 10 and 11 to consider studying science subjects at GCSE level as a first step in considering careers in science and engineering. John said, ‘We're very grateful to Peter Irwin from the Worsley Club for organising yet another fantastic event.’

Rotary's Excitement of Science lecture series has been running for more than 20 years, covering many different science aspects. This year more than 300 students from Hope Academy, Golborne High School, Byrchall and St Edmund Arrowsmith High Schools had the opportunity to participate in the lecture delivered live from the Jodrell Bank Observatory.

Rotary Clubs in Greater Manchester and North Cheshire fund the event, so there is no cost to participating schools or individual students. The experience may be the spark that encourages students to study science subjects beyond GCSE to 'A' level and then on to University before embarking on science-based careers.

Science teacher Sonia Hillidge, from Golborne High School, has attended the event for years. 'Over the past seven years, I have been attending the 'Excitement of Science' lectures with a group of around 30 pupils from key stage 4 at Golborne High School. Pupils have significantly benefitted from this experience, some going on to pursue education and careers in science. The subjects and delivery have always been exceptional and highly engaging. I look forward to next year when we can all meet in person again!'
