Students at Sandbach High School and Sixth Form College were so moved to hear from the Rotary Club of Sandbach about the work of the charity Rise Against Hunger, and the Club’s fundraising project, that they decided to adopt it and raise funds themselves.

Members of the Rotary Club of Sandbach spoke at school assemblies about the charity and the club’s project to organise a Meal Pack event where it was planned to pack more than 60,000 nutritious dehydrated meals to be sent by Rise Against Hunger to some of the world’s most vulnerable people.

Each form at the school set itself a target to raise £20 with an overall target for the school of £1000. As well as direct giving, the students baked and sold cakes, ran a popcorn stall and organised various other activities. In the end, a total of £2418 was raised - £1,000 of it by one form - and a cheque was recently handed over at the school to Rotary Sandbach,

Nicki Oyler, Assistant Head at the school, who had co-ordinated the fundraising, said, “Students were really inspired by the work of Rise Against Hunger and worked tirelessly to raise as much as possible, far exceeding their targets.”

The Meal pack had been scheduled to take place, at the High School, in mid-May but had to be put on hold due to Covid regulations. Several students at the school, as well as members of staff, had volunteered to help over the two days.

President of Rotary Sandbach, Rtn David Barringer, received the cheque from the students and expressed the gratitude of the club. He presented Certificates of Achievement for each of the form groups and another for the school as a whole.
