A keen metal-detectorists, saved the day and helped to get Irlam Rotary Club member John Morley out of a potentially problematic situation!
John a member of the Club for more than 35 years was out working on one of the Rotary Clubs fantastic In Bloom Planters near to Cadishead Park, when he managed to lose his precious wedding ring in one of the tiers of the planter.
Despite a frantic search he just could not locate the ring and with his 50th Wedding Anniversary looming, was at a loss what to do
But then Rotary volunteer Nathan Holt, (pictured with Irlam Rotary President Jane and the lost ring) the son of the clubs vice-chairman Mike and accompanied by President Jane Williams took to modern technology and pinged to the rescue!
They used Nathans state of the art metal detector and were able to locate the hidden precious metal, that was indeed in the planter, much to the relief and gratitude of John Morley.
Mike Holt said, We were looking for about 25 minutes, I did the top layers Jane did the middle and Nathan found it on the second to the bottom layer.
Mike added, We started metal detecting four years ago, just going around the Park, Ship Canal and the Rixton Clay Pits etc. We have never found any gold or silver but it is good family fun and we have turned up the odd interesting find. Nathan is 16 years old and he has just started Pendleton College. We recently found a rare rock we thought was a meteorite and we took it to Manchester Science Museum. They analysed it and it turned out to be andesite, which is formed near lava. Nathan donated it to the museum and they were very thankful for the addition to their collection.
Rotarian and past President of the Rotary Club of Irlam John Morley pictured with wife June said, My wife June and I celebrated our Golden Wedding recently with a holiday in Norfolk. I cannot thank enough Nathan and the detector team for finding my wedding ring, I thought it was actually lost for ever.
Thank you for saving the day!
