Just before the Covid-19 situation, the club’s Foundation and International Committee instigated a new project - “£400 Lamplighter Prize”. The project aimed to help and support a student attending one of our local universities who is involved in a good cause/charity work, and to raise awareness of the Rotary International among the local academic community.

Mitchell Greengrass, a second-year student at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, was the winner of the competition. He will use his award to work with the charity “Educate the Children” in Kenya.

Even though Mitchell’s visit to Kenya had to be postponed because of the current situation, he volunteered to entertain us by holding a musical event on Wednesday, 26 August 2020 via a zoom meeting.

The event was attended by Rotarians, their partners and guests. District Governor Peter James-Robinson, Immediate Past District Governor Patrick Tyrrell and District Community Team Leader Rosemary Boardman also attended.

After brief introductory remarks by Najib Yousif (chair of Foundation and International Committee), the talented singer/songwriter spoke about himself and his project in Kenya. He then sang four Classical and modern songs and played the guitar.

He started with a beautiful masterpiece of Classical music – “Vergebliches St�ndchen” (Brahms), and then “For You There Is No Song” (Leslie Adams), “Awake My Soul” (composed by Mitchell himself) and “Feeling Good” (Michael Bublé).

The event was greatly enjoyed by all the attendees.
