Clive Howlett who has a distinguished career in education, is chair of the Knutsford and District Talking Newspaper and a member of the Rotary Club of Macclesfield Castle had accepted the challenge to cycle 500 km from Lusaka to Livingstone in Zambia scheduled for May 2020 in aid of Lendwithcare, the charity both Clive and the Rotary Club of Macclesfield Castle are supporting.
Due to Covid-19, the Bike Ride has been rescheduled to May 2021, which means that Clive will be 71 when the challenge takes place. Clive will also have to maintain his training for another 12 months. Undaunted, Clive is continuing his training schedule: I have dropped my weekly mileage a little as I reschedule another 12 months of training. The lockdown has benefits for road cycling, although the Cheshire lanes can be narrow when you meet an oncoming delivery van!
Im delighted that all my fellow riders from across the country are still planning to complete the challenge for this worthwhile charity.
Lendwithcare.org is a UK charity that supports small scale businesses throughout Asia, Africa and South America. Rotary provides help by supplying entrepreneurs with loans to enable their business ideas to grow. They then pay back the loan over an agreed period. Once the loan is repaid it can be reused for to support new business.
All the money Clive raises will be donated to Lendwithcare.org to enable them to continue offering this wonderful service as he is funding the trip himself.
Over the past five years Macclesfield Castle Rotary have provided 153 loans to help 637 entrepreneurs. Through these loans the Rotary Club have helped 2124 family members and created 454 new jobs. This has enabled children in remote villages to go to school; medical bills to be paid and lives changed. What is amazing is that in five years there are no defaults on the loans.
Lendwithcare say Make a loan. Change a life. Clive can be supported to raise money for LendwithCare by donating to his Just Giving Page at
