It was an anxious time for the organisers of the inaugural Technology Tournament in Bury the day before the event as storm Ciara had flooded the grounds and boiler house of the venue, Derby High School. There was relief at 6am next day that the water had receded and the event was on.
Fourteen teams of four Year 9 students from five schools across Bury competed to build a crane that would lift a container of hazardous waste from a derailed railway truck while the operator maintained a safe distance.
The four judges worked hard throughout the day assessing teamwork, development of ideas, manufacturing skill and test performance of the crane.
The winning team came from St Gabriels RC High School and its members were presented with the trophy by DG Patrick.
The judges commended all the contestants on being unfailingly polite, pleasant with staff and with each other, cheerful, hard-working and creative. The event was a collaboration between the four Rotary clubs in Bury.
