In 2017 Radcliffe Rotary launched a 2 year project to raise enough money to build a Clean Water Well in the Cameroon. Estimated cost circa £ 6500.
This followed a talk at Club by a member's grandson who, whilst studying at the University of Southampton had become involved with an established charity - Cameroon Catalyst. Students from the university visit the Cameroon annually to assist with planning and engineering expertise for humanitarian projects.
In March 2019 the target was reached following a Gala Charity Dinner attended by 130 local supporters.
The Club also received an award of £1000 from the District Foundation Grant fund.Final cost for this particular Well in the village of Petit Bello was £6370.
Construction by a local Contractor was completed in June 2019 and the Well was officially handed over at a village ceremony.
In a recent e-mail received from Cameroon Catalyst the following excerpt is testament to the success of the project and the Radcliffe Club is pleased to report------------- the village nurse has noticed a significant drop in the number of children coming to the infirmary with diarrhoea and other water born diseases. Only 11 children were treated since July compared to 76 cases last year---------------- there is a rigorous timetable now to monitor the usage of the well , that everyone in the village observes.
