Carol Cross of the Rotary Club of Stockport Lamplighter recently visited Khensani Primary School in the Township of Soshanguve, South Africa, which Lamplighter has supported for many years.
She took along over thirty pairs of black school shoes to be donated to the orphans and child led families in the school She also took money from many friends of Lamplighter which will be used to buy weekly food for the six child led families in the school. These are families where the head of the household is under sixteen years of age.
Along with the Head Themba, she worked out menus which mainly consisted of pap ( Millie maize, rather like a stodgy porridge), vegetables and chicken legs.
Although without parents and obviously money, these children are very resilient and often grow much of their own food.
Since Carol first visited eighteen years ago the school has grown from 159 pupils to the present day 1,502 !!!
